Jonathan Pike, Principal
Welcome to San Lorenzo High School ! It is an honor and privilege to be serving as the Principal of the amazing and historic flagship school within the San Lorenzo community. We have such an amazing staff of teachers and classified support that truly make our Grizzly family a place of home for your students and teenagers at SLzHS. We are committed to embracing our diversity as our strength that builds resilient, and civically-engaged advocates for equity and social justice.
At SLzHS, you will find a wide range of programs, activities, and opportunities to explore and grow as they prepare to become college and career ready. Whether students are engaged in their Small Learning Communities (SLCs) of Bay Area Digital Arts (BADA), Law and Leadership (LLC), or our AVID Promise community, they will find success in discovering a pathway that will lead them in a positive direction to achieving their dreams. Our Newcomer Program for English Learners is a model program for the state that supports students of all backgrounds and experiences. For those interested in our Athletic Programs, we offer a wide range of sports that support our student athletes in areas of Football, Cross Country, Track, Volleyball, Badminton, Wrestling, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, and many more. Lastly, we have a variety of student clubs that provide opportunities for our students to be involved and learn outside of the classroom who they are, Link Crew, La Raza, Game Club, Black Student Union, G.S.A., Interact Club, Poly Club, Dance Club, Anime, Ignite, TV & Film Club, Druids, and several more. In short, SLz Grizzly Nation offers something for everyone.
Parents continue to be the vital part of our students' success at our school as we highly encourage all parents to be involved and informed at what happens at SLzHS. We invite your input and participation in our many community events, and through our Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). We hold meetings twice monthly both morning and evenings for all parents to get information about our school, parent/teenager support, college readiness, and much more.
Our academics offered at SLzHS are rigorous and challenging for all students. We offer a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses to prepare students for the demands of college. We have a strong Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program with Ceramics, Art, Photography, Choir, Guitar, Digital Music, Drama, Video Production, and Advanced Video/TV. Add in our Yearbook, Journalism, Creative Writing, Multimedia/Web, Public Safety and Justice, Media Arts, and Ethnic Studies courses, it really allows students choice in their education. Our counselors and their team are the best I've seen in my 15 years of education, so rest assured, your student will be in good hands to achieving their goals through their high school experience.
We are proud of our Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation by receiving a maximum six-year term that validates our mission and vision in providing a safe and quality learning environment that challenges students in academic achievement and social emotional growth to being successful members of the 21st century.
I look forward to serving daily as the Principal and leader for SLzHS and it is without a doubt that I am proud each and every day to witness the amazing students, staff, and community that we call our Grizzly family. Our students truly embrace the Grizzly pride of SLz and continue to be proud to call it home. We are SAN LORENZO.
About Principal Pike,
Born in New Hampshire, I grew up on both sides of the country in both San Diego, CA and Laconia, New Hampshire during my childhood. I attended high school in San Diego and enlisted into the US Army following graduation. I served 3 years on active duty and deployed overseas to Egypt for a UN Peacekeeping Mission, and to Panama for Operation Just Cause. I entered California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo where I studied Engineering and second majored in Environmental Horticultural Science. While at CalPoly, I completed a commission through ROTC and achieved a commission with the Army National Guard as a Second Lieutenant. I went on to complete a Masters in Agricultural Education and then entered the world of teaching that lasted over 10 years before I was called to Army active duty and deployed oversees. Upon my return from my deployment, I entered the Educational Administration Leadership program at National University and left active duty upon completion to work at Vallejo High School as a Vice Principal overseeing the Engineering Academy for 4 years. I now serve as the proud Principal of San Lorenzo High School. I also am still serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the CA Army National Guard in the role of state Logistics Maintenance Chief at the Joint Forces Headquarters in Sacramento. I have over 23 years in the Army and 16 in Education. I plan to enter a doctorate program for Educational Leadership in the very near future. Lastly, I have a family and enjoy time doing fun stuff such as hiking, skateboarding, mountain biking, and even video games once in a while.
