English 9 (2020-2021)-Period 1 Assignments

Read the attached story. As you read, identify the elements of a short story (protagonist, antagonist, conflict, plot points, etc.). Once you feel like you fully understand the story and have identified as much as you can, log in to socrative and take the final. You may keep the story up and reference it as you take the test.

Remember you need to have your camera ON as you work on this final. I am trusting you to show Academic Integrity.

We will be working on this slideshow during Advisory all semester long. It is very important that you complete the slides as they are assigned. If you wait until the last minute, your slideshow will not be very good. And this is going to be your Advisory FINAL this semester!

Each time we work on it I will add more instructions here. You will NOT submit the slideshow until it is complete in January.

Pictures can be of your hobbies, interests, culture, favorite school subject, sports, or actual pictures of yourself that you have emailed to your school account from your phone or home device. (should have at least 5 images)

10/7 Assignment: Slide 3
AFTER taking the Learning Styles Survey - read the description of your Learning Style

Slide 3:
-AT LEAST 2 natural abilities you agree with
-AT LEAST 2 ways you learn best
-AT LEAST 1 thing you may have trouble with
-AT LEAST 1 thing you need to work on to be a more successful learner

Choose the things from the list you MOST think are true. If you do not agree with ANY of the things on the list and you feel that they don't describe you, include a sentence or two explaining why you think this assessment of your learning style was NOT accurate.

Include at least one image that goes along with your learning style (can be the fruit, or something else that reflects your learning style)

12/2 Assignment: Slide 4

Slide 4:
Create a "map" of your Academic Journey so far. Include:
-The names of all the schools you have gone to
-TWO successes from the start of school through 8th grade
-TWO struggles you've faced from the start of school through 8th grade
-San Lorenzo High School as the end point (for now)
-ONE success and ONE struggle from 9th grade so far
-At least three pictures or images that fit with your school experiences

1/4 Assignment: Slides 5&6
Slide 5:
-Write 2-3 bullet points summarizing how you have felt about your first semester of high school. You can reference academics and social things. You can talk about what went well and what you need to improve on. You can reference your goals and whether or not you met them. Try not two write TOO much. Just keep it to the main points.
-Include at least one image that goes along with your reflection

Slide 6:
-Create three new Growth Mindset Goals for 2nd semester. These can be brand new goals or goals that build off your 1st semester goals.
-Include at least one image that goes along with your goals.

As we come to the end of a VERY long year, it is important to think about happiness and how to be happy. I HIGHLY recommend working on this slideshow a little bit at a time over the course of Winter Break - NOT all in one sitting. You can get UP TO 30 extra credit points if you complete the whole thing.

If you do not plan to do the project, but want to get it off your to do list, you can turn it in with a note saying you didn't actually do it. I WILL have to give it a 0 just to get it out of my "to be graded" list - but it won't hurt your grade at all, because it is extra credit.

For this project you are going to create an illustrated plotline for one of the short stories we read this unit (you CANNOT choose “The Sniper” because I created an example slideshow for you using that story)

For the Title Slide include the Story Title and Author’s Name and at least one image that you feel represents the story as a whole.

For the rest of the slides explain what happens in each part of the plot in complete sentences and include AT LEAST one image that illustrates that moment (do NOT just include screenshots from the film versions of the movies - look for your own unique images to use)

Feel free to change the theme/background on the slideshow and make sure to proofread your assignment prior to submitting. Major spelling and grammar mistakes will lose points.

Use this basic outline, and ADD adjective and adverbs (ex: LOUD knock, SLOWLY walked) and CHANGE the nouns and verbs (ex: change SOUND to SCREECH) to convey the three different moods. Be prepared to share during the next class.
