EXTRA CREDIT / math enrichment opportunity! in Google Classroom

EXTRA CREDIT / math enrichment opportunity!

This is a totally optional and open-ended exploration assignment that gives you a chance to explore an area of math that matters to you.

What interests you in math? What do you want to learn more about? I'll list some possible topics:
- Do you want to dive deep into COVID math and debunk some conspiracies?
- Do you want to explore the data of issues in our community such as economic inequality, racial discrimination in policing, and represent the data in a unique way?
- Do you want to explore math in nature?
- Do you want to explore the math in different games (like Set)?
- Does your future career have some math that you want to explore further?
- Do you want to conduct your own experiment?

Email me your idea ([email protected]) so I can help you think about it and give you a boost.

If you had an F in your third quarter grade, please ONLY do this assignment after you've fully completed all the other assignments in the School Closure topic on the Google Classroom assignments. If you complete all those, you will likely receive credit for the class. Please reach out to me if you're worried.
If you had any type of A, B, C, or D in your third quarter grade, you are automatically receiving credit for the class - mainly this means that you aren't behind in credits. It doesn't affect your GPA or next year's math placement. So this assignment is mostly an enrichment.

I'm excited for anyone who wants to explore something that interests them in math! Please complete most/something by Fri June 5th so I can get a sense of things for grading.

With love and nerdiness,
Gilden

Math II Menu Week of May 25-29

Hello beautiful people!

This is the LAST assignment I'm posting this school year! Wow! What a weird end to the year...
The last weeks of school will be a time for you to finish your missing/incomplete assignments, and I will post some optional extra credit assignments.
This week will also be my last week of holding optional Zoom meetings. After this week, I'm happy to hold a Zoom at your request. I'm still around, just reach out!
I'll still be posting Attendance Questions which, as you know, are just fun ways to see that you're still checking in.

I'm excited to share a personal finance/financial literacy option in this week's menu. I'll be posting the video/slides/budget template as a separate assignment so people can access it more easily.

Finally, I'm scheduling this to post on Monday, but Monday is a holiday (Memorial Day). I will be taking the day off and not answering emails. Maybe you should take the day off too!

I hope everyone is hanging in there! We're going to be okay!

With love,
Gilden

Welcome to another week of virtual math! I hope y'all are finding these assignments manageable and maybe even fun. I love seeing your work and suggestions!

Please make sure to take your time and put your effort into the quality of your work. Give yourself an hour or two to do these assignment. That's not a lot of your entire week, so you owe it to yourself to spend that time to show your great thinking.

Also, please press SUBMIT on Google Classroom once you are finished, otherwise I don't know. I will be able to see your slides and anything else you submit.

Attendance Question Week of May 11-15 in Google Classroom

Attendance Question Week of May 11-15

This is inspired by the truly traumatic event that happened to me last Wednesday. I like to keep all the windows open in our place, and I heard Pablo the cat come in through the door in the other room and start meowing a ton. So I went to see what he was up to, and he had a DEAD BIRD!!! I got very scared and RAN outside and started screaming at him and kind of crying because I wanted him to stop. He was hitting the bird all over our apartment, and every time I got close to him to try to get him to stop, he got super defensive and I got scared and ran outside again. I swear he had these crazed eyes of a murderer that were very scary. I called Eli (he was at work) but he couldn't really help me because he was going into a meeting. I was basically trapped outside scared and half crying for like 30 minutes. Finally, Pablo got sick of the dead bird and went outside again, so I went inside to dispose of the bird. THERE WERE FEATHERS ALL OVER MY APARTMENT! I had to disinfect everything with bleach and then take a shower because I felt so gross. This, my dear students, is adulthood.

So you probably know my answer, but...which do you prefer?

Math II Week of May 04-May 08 in Google Classroom

Math II Week of May 04-May 08

Happy May! Here's another week of menu math. I hope you've found it decent to manage with your other classes and without having the structure of school and people to help you with math.

This menu contains videos for people who will continue on to Math III or Math Modeling (especially Math III though). I'll put it in the next few menus for y'all.

Also, Happy Star Wars Day today (May the Fourth be with you!). I've never seen Star Wars so I started watching them. Disney+ is releasing Episode IV today so I'm stoked to watch it tonight and finish the series!

Math II Menu Week of April 27-May 01

Similar to last week's structure, you are asked to do three things.

1) No-wrong-answers graph analysis. While there are no wrong answers, please make sure you read the description of the graph and the axes so you understand what the graph is showing. Assume these are quality graphs (they posted by the New York Times, which I trust.)

2) Your choice of one of four activities. You can do more if you're bored!

3) Survey of how you're doing/feedback. This time it's not in a form.

With lots of love,
Gilden

Math II Week of April 20-24 in Google Classroom

Math II Week of April 20-24

Hi Students,

I hope you all were able to relax and take a break from thinking about school during this past spring break week. It sucks that we can't go out or see people during spring break, but I'm grateful to have a safe home to shelter-in-place, and that everyone I know is healthy. I hope you can find some things to be grateful about too!

I'm trying something new this week. I'm asking you to do THREE things this week.
1) Analyze a graph.
2) Do another math activity that you choose out of a selection of options.
3) Complete a survey telling me how you're doing and giving me feedback.

Everything is explained in the Google Slides "Math II menu 20042024" file, including how to submit. I'm giving you a due date of this Friday (April 24) so you don't get too lazy, but as with all my assignments during this time, I'm not penalizing you for submitting late, and your grade will not be lowered when you turn anything in.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I'll be fully available again. I will have Google Meets calls on Tuesday & Thursday from 2-3pm. I'll post the details when the time comes.

With love,
Gilden

Math II School Closure packet assessment in Google Classroom

Math II School Closure packet assessment

This is a quiz to assess your work on the packet I gave three weeks ago. I'm calling it a "quiz" because I'm going to put it in your individual assessment category to hopefully raise your grade, as long as you do it.
This quiz can be completed AT ANY TIME without a late penalty, but I suggest finishing it before you start spring break so you can enjoy your break, and not get behind when I post a new assignment after break.

1. Complete the packet first, to the best of your ability, before starting the quiz.

2. Use academic honesty and integrity to complete this on your own, using only the work you've done.

3. Read each question carefully, because many questions ask for something specific about your answer.
