Debate or Essay: Should Truman use atomic bombs against Japanese cities?

You can either participate in the debate to earn your 30 assessment points, or you can write a 400 word minimum essay instead. The essay should be written to convince Truman what to do regarding Japan and the atomic bombs. It must:

Lincoln Debate (or essay) in Google Classroom

Lincoln Debate (or essay)

This assignment is worth 30 assessment points - put in an appropriate amount of work/effort.

On the day of the debate, be prepared - that means you have your debate preparation assignment completed and you are ready to argue for your side for a minimum of 2.5 minutes. If you are unprepared/unable to participate, or you are absent, you will be assigned Option 2 (the 600 word essay). If you are doing the essay, please do not interrupt the debate or take up class time with questions about it as Mr. Hake and the other students will be focused on the debate itself and will not have time to assist you.

See the attached document for the essay requirements.

The score that is recorded for this assignment is the score you received for your debate performance (or essay). If you are unhappy with your debate grade or just want Extra Credit, submit the essay in addition.

Snapshot Autobiography v2 in Google Classroom

Snapshot Autobiography v2

Use the Example and the Template attached. For complete assignment directions, read the description below.

The purpose of this project is for all of us in this classroom to get to know one another better. It is also a chance for you to get to know yourself better, to become more aware of you own unique perspective of your own history.

Steps to Complete Project:
1) Take blank, regular size piece of paper and fold it so that it forms 3 panels (like a letter you’d mail). Counting front and back, you should have six panels. Or, simply use the digital template provided by Mr. Hake.

2) Create an “About the Author” section on the back panel. To create this panel, you must first take the time to think about who you really are. Not superficially (on the surface), but inside. What are the most important things about you? Write this in your “About the Author” section. Include a self-portrait (drawn or digital).

3) On the third, fourth, and fifth panels, you are going to write about the three most important events that have shaped you as a person, that have molded you into who you are today (first, you will have to think long and hard about who you are today!). This means that you are selecting a total of three important events (besides your birth) from your life.
• For each of these three events, write a narrative (story) describing what happened. Make sure you describe it from start to finish. Pretend that someone who doesn’t know you will be reading your story and trying to understand it. Be sure to include details! Focus on how the event changed you and shaped who you are today.
• Illustrate each event with a small picture.
• You will be have the opportunity to share one of these 4 events with the class (make sure you have one event you are comfortable sharing with everyone). You cannot share the story of your birth. Mr. Hake will not share the contents of your autobiography with anyone.

4) Next, create a cover page on the front panel of your Snapshot Autobiography.
• Give your autobiography a title, for example, “Snapshots from the Life of Ben.”
• Illustrate the cover with a relevant image (hand-drawn or otherwise).
• Include your name, place and date of birth.

5) This leaves one more page, the second page. On this second page, write about your birth. Your birth story should include as many details as possible (date, time, location, weight, etc). You will probably have to get his info from someone else who was present for your birth.

Evaluating Sources in Google Classroom

Evaluating Sources

For each of the 6 historical questions posed in this activity, describe why the sources may or may not be reliable. Then explain which source would have more reliable information to answer the question.

Every red line indicates a place where you are required to provide an answer. Record your answers in red text by clicking on the red line and typing out your response.
