2019-2020 Courses

Period 1: English 12 ERWC - The goal of the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) is to prepare college-bound seniors for the literacy demands of higher education - helping students read, comprehend, and respond to nonfiction and literary texts.  Students develop advanced proficiency in expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing.

Periods 2 and 4:  Sheltered English 11/12 - In this course we will focus on literary works which will serve as springboards for meaningful discussions, various forms of writing, artistic expression, and presentations.  Through our analyses, interpretations, discussions, questions, additional readings, and intellectual curiosity, we will seek the author’s purpose in the works we read.  And in knowing the purpose of literary works, we will discover and discuss how they relate to our experiences.  Additionally, we will focus on improving our grammar, vocabulary, writing, speaking, listening, test-taking, and study skills through integrated English Language Development.

Periods 3 & 5:  AP English Literature - This AP English Lit and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature.  Through the close reading of selected texts from various genres and time periods, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers.  As they read, students consider a work's structure, style and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone.
